GARY LAM SEMINAR IN GERMANY

An interim report by Clive Potter and Nick Forrer

We have just returned from the Gary Lam seminar. What can I say. Gary is a very nice guy, very friendly, charismatic, very open with information, very fast, very powerful, very knowledgeable. I was there with Nick Forrer, Adam Cope and Anthony Kan. We stayed in the same hotel as Gary and actually our rooms were next door to his. We apart form Nick, had been introduced to him earlier as Nick arrived late on Friday night. Adam with Nick bumped into Gary on the hotel stairs and introduced Nick. Straight away there was chi sau on the stairs! Gary has a lot of knowledge of other systems as well as Ving Tsun including Thai boxing and ju-jitsu. Nick (I hope, as he was taking many notes throughout the seminar) will be shortly giving a full report. On the last night Gary had me, Anthony, Nick and Adam taking turns chi sau'ing with him in Nick's hotel room. This was after we had all been talking, eating, drinking and demonstrating in the hotel restaurant. Gary is so enthusiastic he just keeps going and going.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Sifu Gary Lam - the mans knowledge of wing chun is vast and he was completely open with it. I spent about 2 hrs at dinner just asking him question after question - about fighting, Beimo against other Kung Fu styles, Muay Thai, Wong Shun Leung, Yip man, the origins of WC, Chi sau, the forms (I even got an brief seminar on BG from him). All weekend he was dropping pearls left, right and centre and I was frantically taking notes ( I have pages and pages from just 2 days)
While there is much of information on his DVDs there are nuances to how he does it in person that I only fully understood from having him demonstrate on me. One of the highlights of the seminar was when he let me throw all different kinds of kicks at him - to the legs, body and head and showed me all the different ways of countering them using wing chun and Muay Thai. He also very kindly let me touch hands with him and feel his power as he threw me and Adam around my room for an hour after dinner.

Verdict: The best seminar on wing chun I have been to.

Sifu Anthony Kan also chi sau'ed with me and let me try ju jitsu and muay thai on him whilst he used his wing chun. This guys skill level is also amazing the way he was able to counter it all using simple wing chun actions.

Peter Hsu was very generous and kindly let me chi sau with him - thank you Peter for all your help.

And a huge thank you to Werner and Uli for organising it all and bringing everyone together. I hope this can act as a model for further Wong Shun Leung family meetings where bridges can be built and more unity and understanding can Prevail.

2 november 2003 was in Barendrecht een trainingsdag van een Nederlandse Wing Chun school. Dit jaar hadden was er een gasttraining van niemand minder dan Bob Schreiber en zijn vrouw Irma Verhoef.

Bij het horen van de naam Bob Schreiber denk je meteen aan Free Fight en kooigevechten. Dat klopt Bob is in beide wereldkampioen geweest en heeft 135 keer gevochten in zulke gevechten. Maar ook Irma heeft diverse wereldtitels op haar naam. Bob is onder andere beroemd om zijn lowkick
